Diabetes is Not a Life Sentence

I’ve learned that a diagnosis of diabetes is not a death sentence, but a life-changing event that will require discipline in every area of your life. In 1985, the thought of giving myself an injection of insulin three times a day was nothing short of frightening. Diabetes, coupled with the other serious medical condition I was battling made me wonder; will I ever get through this, has God forsaken me? Yet I knew with everything in me that He hadn’t. When I cancelled the pity party and came to myself, my journey began.

My first step was to educate myself and gather as much information as I could about treatment, monitoring, diet and exercise. It’s been 29 years and one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that; as an adult with diabetes, I must be proactive and responsible for the care and self -management of this disease.

Children with diabetes need parent(s) and/or caregivers who are well informed and educated about diabetes treatment and management. I encourage you to be proactive and learn as much as you can about diabetes and how we can, together, combat and stop the spread of diabetes.

Be encouraged and know, your journey may be frustrating, challenging and sometimes scary, but you can and will make it through this victorious!
