Against All Odds: Part 1

dead-end-2550423_1920I don’t know about you, but there have been times in my life when it seemed like the odds were stacked against me. It appeared I had no visible means of support. I felt like I was under siege with no means of escape. Have you ever gone through a season that lasted for years with little or no relief? Have you ever reached the point where you felt like if one more thing happens…

After seven years of Midianite oppression, an angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon. While Gideon was in hiding from the enemy, the angel called him a mighty man of valor. The Lord commissioned Gideon to deliver the Israelites out of the hands of the Midianites (Judges 6:12, 14).

Gideon responded to his assignment with complaints about his lack of qualifications. He thought so little of himself, he couldn’t picture himself accomplishing anything so great. Gideon had no idea who he really was. His past had shaped his identity. But God spoke into Gideon’s life to change his self-perception, the way he saw himself. Just as He did with Gideon, God wants to change the way you see yourself, your situation, and reveal who He is, and what you can do through Him in spite of your past or present circumstances. You will never achieve your full potential with a limited or distorted perception of yourself or God.

When God beckons us out of our comfort zone we tend to respond like Gideon. How can God expect me to go to college when I barely made it out of high school? How can I start a business with no money? How can I raise these kids by myself? How can I do this at my age?

The key to success in your God-given assignment is embedded in Judges 6:16. Gideon was empowered to deliver the Israelites because the Lord was with him. He had favor. Do you know what real favor is? Favor isn’t a house, car, promotion or financial blessings. These things are merely byproducts of favor. Real favor is when the Lord is with you. Gideon saw himself as insignificant, poor and powerless. But God called him a mighty man of valor. Valor means strength, ability, leader of the army. God didn’t see Gideon stuck in his predicament; rather He called him what He ordained he would become.

2018 is the year of the “Fresh Start.” Time out for standing on the sidelines and watch God move in the lives of others. God has great plans concerning YOU! God called you before you were formed in your mother’s womb. That call echoed throughout the portals of time and carried you through all your nonsense, pain, hurt, divorce, abuse, layoff, doctor’s report, eviction, shame, embarrassment, foreclosure, losses, suicide attempt, etc… The word God spoke over your life has sustained you for such a time as this.

Join us next week for Against All Odds Part 2 as we discuss the promise of victory.

Until next time…Be blessed!
